Wasp Nest Near a Soffit or Roofline? Signs and Safe Next Steps

Wasps circling the yard are common in warm weather. Repeated traffic to one small opening beneath an eave is different: it may indicate a nest at or behind the soffit. You may see a visible paper nest, or only insects entering and leaving a gap. Identify the activity from a safe distance before deciding what work is needed.

What to observe without getting close

Watch the same area from well away from the flight path. Note whether wasps repeatedly use one opening, whether a nest is visible and whether the spot is near a doorway, play area or regularly used patio. Do not climb a ladder, poke the nest or block the opening. A concealed nest can be larger than the visible entry suggests, and disturbing it may provoke stings.

Health Canada’s wasp guidance describes common nest forms and prevention measures. It also notes that food and sweet drinks left uncovered outdoors can attract wasps. Keeping bins closed and cleaning up food helps reduce attraction around the property, though it will not remove an established nest.

When to call for help

If the nest is close to people, high on the building, inside a wall or soffit, or difficult to identify, arrange an assessment. Tell the technician where the flight path is and whether anyone at the property has a known sting allergy. Keep children and pets away from the area until it has been dealt with. If someone develops signs of a severe allergic reaction after a sting, seek emergency medical help.

The treatment approach depends on the insect, nest location and access. After the activity is resolved, the technician can advise whether a gap should be repaired and when. Sealing an active entry prematurely can push insects toward another exit, including an interior space.

Reduce future nesting opportunities

Check soffits, eaves and exterior fixtures during routine home maintenance, especially before nests grow. Repair damaged screens or gaps when no nest is active. Keep food covered outdoors and secure garbage. A professional inspection can distinguish a wasp nest from another insect issue and help prioritize repairs.

Empire Wildlife Control offers wasp nest removal in Pickering, Uxbridge, Markham and surrounding Durham and York Region communities.

Frequently asked questions

I see wasps at the soffit but no nest. Is there one inside? It is possible, but repeated traffic needs inspection before the location can be confirmed.

Should I seal the gap right away? No. Have active insects addressed before sealing a suspected nest entrance.

Will removing outdoor food fix an established nest? No. It reduces attractants but does not remove a nest already in or on the building.
