Rodent-Proofing Your Home Before Winter: An Exterior Checklist

As temperatures change, homeowners often notice fresh mouse or rat activity around garages, basements and kitchens. A short exterior inspection can reveal openings before animals settle indoors. Rodent-proofing is most useful when you pair repairs with food control and a plan for any active infestation.

Walk the outside of the house

Start at ground level and move around the building slowly. Look where foundation walls meet siding, around utility pipes, at basement windows, and below exterior doors. Check garage door corners and the weather stripping. At higher areas, inspect damaged soffits and vents from the ground; avoid climbing onto the roof without proper equipment.

Check these five common weak points

  1. Door gaps: A worn sweep or uneven threshold may leave an easy route into the garage.
  2. Pipe penetrations: Openings around utility lines can connect directly to wall cavities.
  3. Vents: Damaged covers should be repaired while preserving proper airflow.
  4. Foundation cracks: Inspect repairs that have separated or deteriorated.
  5. Storage areas: Boxes, bird seed and pet food can make a garage attractive even when entry is limited.

Health Canada identifies easy entry points, food and shelter as central to rat and mouse prevention. Its guidance for rats and mice also explains the role of appropriate control measures.

Know when to seal and when to inspect first

If you see fresh droppings or hear activity inside a wall, first identify the animal and route it is using. Closing the only visible opening without a plan can leave an animal inside or send it to another part of the building. A professional can coordinate treatment and exclusion, then check whether additional entry points need work.

Keep the inside less inviting

Use sealed containers for pantry and pet food. Clean crumbs, repair leaks and keep garbage lids closed. These habits support the repair work, but they cannot replace inspection when the problem is established. See our exclusion and damage repair service for how entry work fits into a removal plan.

Schedule a local inspection

Empire can assess rodent entry concerns for properties in Uxbridge, Oshawa, Markham and nearby communities. Call (289) 408-9940 to describe what you found and ask about the next inspection step.
