Rat Burrows Near Your Home? Signs to Check and Steps to Take
A hole beside a shed or disturbed soil near the foundation can raise a question: are rats using the property? A single hole does not prove the animal, but repeated activity, droppings and gnaw marks deserve a closer look. Rat control works best when you identify the activity, reduce food and shelter, and close the routes into buildings.
Where to look for rat activity outside
- Along foundations, under decks and around sheds or outbuildings.
- Near outdoor garbage, bird seed, pet food or compost.
- Beside dense vegetation or stored materials that provide cover.
- At doors, vents and utility penetrations that could lead indoors.
Take a photo and note when you saw movement, but avoid handling an animal, disturbing a burrow or reaching into a concealed area. Mice, other small mammals and soil movement can leave confusing signs, so an inspection matters.
Remove what attracts rats
Keep garbage lids tight, clean spills around bins, store pet food indoors and pick up fallen food. Move unnecessary clutter away from exterior walls and trim vegetation that hides access routes. These steps can reduce the conditions that support rats, though they do not replace treatment when an active infestation is present. Health Canada’s rodent control advice emphasizes sanitation and proofing alongside control.
Inspect entry routes into the building
Check worn garage door seals, basement window surrounds, vents and gaps around pipes. An effective plan distinguishes a rat burrow outside from an actual building entry. We assess the structure, discuss suitable control options and recommend repairs where needed. Do not seal an opening blindly when you suspect animals are still using it.
Professional rat control and follow-up
Our inspection looks for signs of activity and conditions that let rats return. We explain the proposed treatment, follow-up and any exclusion or repair work before starting. Keep children and pets away from any control devices and follow the technician’s instructions.
