Starlings are small or medium sized birds that are the Sturnidae family. There are several species that are in Asia that are the larger birds and they are called mynas and there are ones in Africa that are called glossy starlings because of the way their body shines in the sun light. Starlings originally came from areas such as Europe, Asia, and Africa and they then they migrated to other countries afterwards. Now, starlings can be seen all over the world.

Description

starlingA starling’s size can be described as a medium sized bird. There is a short bodied species called Kenrick’s starling that is no more than six inches long and the lightest species is called Abbott’s starling which weigh roughly 1.2 oz. The largest known starling when you refer to the size and weight is the Nias hill myna. This type of species is about 14 inches in length and weighs roughly 14 oz. The mynas species have a yellow face and long tails.

The plumage of a starling is typically bright in color because of it being shiny. The shininess of the feathers isn’t because of the pigment of the feathers but because of how the feathers are structured. There is very little difference between the males and the females when it concerns the plumage. Most of these brightly colored areas are typically red and yellow and the younger starlings have darker colors.

Behaviors, Mimic, Diet, and Feeding

Starlings are a really social type of family. The size of a flock of starlings varies depending on the time of the year. The flock of a starling is called murmuration. Starlings are so social that when they travel in their flocks they will include other species of starlings and even sometimes include species from other bird families.

Starlings are great at imitating or mimicking other species of birds. They are able to produce 15 to 20 different imitations. They can often sound like sound like other wild birds. These talented little creatures have also been known to imitate man made sounds such as cars and phone boxes. They are considered one of the smartest and most talented birds in the world.

A starling’s diet is typically based on fruits and insects. In some areas of the world starlings are very important because they are really good at spreading seeds so that plants can grow other places. Starlings have also been seen eating fermenting over ripe fruit which makes them look like they are intoxicated. A study was done on European starlings they found out that they have an enzyme that can break down alcohol very quickly which will make it look like they are intoxicated.

Averting Conflicts

A starling’s biggest enemy that they have to deal with is people. Since starlings like to build nests in buildings to raise their baby birds, have shelter, and store their food and this is why people are their biggest threat. There are several ways that you can avert these conflicts yourself but it’s always a good thing to call a professional so they can do it for you and make sure it’s done safely.

Another place that starling love to make nests is gutters. A starling will make a nest in gutter and this will prevent water from draining through them which in turn cause more damage to a building or a home. Empire wildlife control will help solve.

Pigeons are found just about everywhere. They can be quite a nuisance, simply because they are some of the most prolific breeders. They can be found by the thousands deep within cities, and if you have a bird problem, it’s important to know how to deal with it.

Details about Pigeons

pigeon1Pigeons are found it just about everywhere – and they cover a total of approximately 315 different species within the family Columbidae. There are approximately 10 to 15 million in Europe, and millions more throughout the United States. There are approximately 15 inches long and have a wingspan of approximately 40 inches. They have a bluish gray head and a chest that is greenish and sometimes reddish purple. Their feathers are slightly glossy, and they have a black bill. They also have red legs and feet.

The biggest problem with pigeons is that they are prolific breeders. They don’t have one specific breeding season and therefore they will read all year long. These birds are monogamous, so they mate for life. Most of the feral birds are found throughout urban areas, including wherever there are humans.

Where Pigeons Live

Pigeons are going to live anywhere they can find a place. They will almost always be found in major cities, such as New York City, Chicago, Miami, and anywhere else that has large populations. They breed on or inside of buildings, and this can include buildings of any size. There is virtually no place that a pigeon will go to live. They live all around the globe, with the exception of Antarctica, the high Arctic, and the Sahara desert.

They can survive in virtually any surroundings, and they eat anything that they can find. Many pigeons will revive on the crumbs left behind by outside diners. If you ever walked through a park and see where people are eating, there will likely be dozens of pigeons nearby, trying to get as many crumbs as they can find. Often, leaving the crumbs behind will create a bigger problem as more pigeons will enter the area because they know they can find food easily. As such, many restaurants are doing their best to keep their patios clean and crumb free to avoid attracting more pigeons to their area.

Why Pigeons Can be a Problem

Pigeons are problematic for a variety of reasons. There is never just one pigeon. There are generally dozens and sometimes even thousands of them within an area. This means that problems are generally going to be a little more difficult to deal with simply because of the quantity.

Pigeons are known for being dirty birds. They carry an array of parasites and diseases, so you never want to let your kids touch them. Even though they will flock to you when you are eating something, you want to try and keep your distance at all times. The last thing you want is to encounter any kind of their diseases because you never know how it is going to affect you.

In addition to the diseases that they may carry, they will leave pounds of droppings every single year. The more birds you have in an area, the more droppings you are going to have, and this can end up playing a significant amount.

When you have pigeons around your home or business, they can damage structures, cars, patios, and much more. You may need to figure out how to get rid of them from your home as well as ensure that their light pattern does not include your property.

The other thing you have to worry about with pigeons is that they are big bullies. If you have a bird feeder in your backyard, it doesn’t matter what you have in there, the pigeons are going to eat it. They are also going to bully any other birds that you have been trying to attract to your backyard. There are also going to bully the squirrels away, and you would much rather look at squirrels and bluebirds as opposed to pigeons.

How to Deal with Pigeon Problems

When you have a pigeon problem, the good news is that there are humane ways to approach it.

One of the first things you need to deal with is any of the pigeon droppings. These can attract various rodents, including flies, mice, and are very acidic. They can eat away at the underlying surface that they set upon, and this can cost you a significant amount of money in repairs.

The droppings can be difficult to remove, and if there is enough, it’s going to clogged gutters, and eventually way down on your property, potentially causing structural problems. You also want to make sure that it pigeons are getting into your home that you are removing them, similar to what you would deal with if you have bats.

The various DIY solutions to getting rid of pigeons may or may not work for you.  One of the best options is to work with a professional so that they can look at just how extensive your problem is and make recommendations that are specific to your home.
